11. Writing Desk, Jack and Hattie Bush family, early 1900s, Fall City - A wooden folding writing desk belonging to the Jack and Hattie Bush family, early 1900s, approx 8 x 12 inches in size. A lock is present, but no key provided. SEE IMAGES. Two brass hinges connect the two halves of the desk. When unfolded, it forms a slanted writing surface, approx. 3/4 inch high at the low end, and 2 3/4 inches high at the high end. The writing surface is covered with a coarsely woven red cloth, probably cotton. Both halves of the desk have panels which can be opened to access storage spaces. Each panel had a piece of red ribbon to assist in opening the panel; this is gone from lower panel. These panels are hinged only by the fabric of the writing area WHICH IS QUITE FRAGILE. The panels are held up from the storage spaces by a small wooden piece in each corner of the space, ONE OF WHICH IS MISSING IN THE LOWER SPACE. A small brass piece can be swiveled out to keep the lower panel from falling open as the desk is folded to close it. In the upper part of the opened desk are three storage areas. There are two open areas on the sides (approx 1.75 inches square) - possibly to hold ink wells? And in the center is a longer area (approx 7.25 inches x 1.75 inches), with a loose wooden lid, supported in the center, such that pushing on either end will tilt it up so that it can be removed. This was presumably for storing writing instruments.
